Chosen Name

People may go by a different name than what’s on their ID for many reasons. Some people use a middle name or a nickname. Some may be recently married or separated and have not yet changed their ID. Others may choose a cultural name. Some people choose a name that better expresses their gender identity. Whatever the reason, the Library is committed to honouring the name you use.

General information about adding a chosen name and pronouns

• Anyone can add a chosen name and/or pronouns to their Library account
• If your chosen name is different from the name on your ID, we will record the name on your ID in your library account, but for administrative purposes only

How to add a chosen name and pronouns to an existing library account

• In person at a Library branch
  • Verbally: You may add a chosen name and/or pronouns by presenting your library card (or answering security questions about your account) to a staff member at any of our branches and requesting the change
  • With a printed form: You may print out this form, complete it, and hand it to a staff person. Once you present your library card (or answer security questions about your account) to confirm your identity, the staff member will make the change to your account.
• Over the phone
  • You may add or change your chosen name or pronouns over the phone by answering security questions about your account.

Where will your Name on ID remain visible

• In some Library administrative processes
• When engaging with Municipal Services

Since GSPL uses many third-party software services there may be changes made to those services that could result in using your Name on ID in ways that aren’t covered above. We ask for your patience and understanding as we aim to improve this service.
