
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows Greater Sudbury Public Library (GSPL) cardholders to borrow materials from other participating public libraries in Ontario if the item cannot be found in GSPL's catalogue.
How to Make a Request
Create a self-service account to place and manage your own requests. With a self-service account, you can:
- Submit and track requests in real time
- Request renewals
- Cancel requests (before they are shipped)
- Receive automated email updates and reminders

Submit your request using our Interlibrary Loan Request Form, and our staff will search for the item on your behalf. While we will do our best to locate the material you’ve requested, availability depends on lending libraries and cannot be guaranteed.
Please note:
- Requests are processed in the order they are received
- Processing times may vary depending on request volume and lender availability
- You will be notified when your item is ready for pickup or if it cannot be obtained
What Can Be Borrowed?
- Print books
- Audiobooks
- DVDs
- CDs
Availability depends on the lending library’s policies.
What Cannot Be Borrowed?
- Materials added to library collections within the last 12 months.
- Materials that are already part of or are on order for our collection.
- Rare, fragile, and valuable materials.
- Reference materials (directories, dictionaries, encyclopedias, genealogical indices, textbooks, and entire issues of periodicals).
- Items with high local demand.
- 3D items and curated kits.
Special Requests
In addition to standard ILL requests, special requests for the following items can also be made:
Academic Materials
You may request academic items such as:
- Journal articles
- Dissertations
- Textbooks
Please note that service fees may apply depending on the lending institution.

Microfilm
Microfilm and microfiche can be requested through the Archives of Ontario.
To request microfilm:
- Search the Archives of Ontario Microfilm Interloan Catalogue to identify the reels you wish to borrow.
- Record the reference code and a brief description of the records.
- Submit your request using the Interlibrary Loan Microfilm Request Form.

Multiple Copies for Book Club
If you are hosting a book club or discussion group and need additional copies, you may request them through our Interlibrary Loan Book Club Request Form.
