Greater Sudbury Public Library Seeking Next Poet Laureate

Local poets with a passion for advocacy of literacy and local heritage are invited to consider the role of Greater Sudbury’s eighth Poet Laureate.

“Greater Sudbury’s Poet Laureate cultivates opportunities for local creative expression and fosters connection with literacy, arts and poetry,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “On behalf of all residents, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to outgoing Poet Laureate Kyla Heyming for championing poetry in the community over the past two years.”

Greater Sudbury’s Poet Laureate will serve as an active advocate for poetry, literacy and literature by initiating and participating in readings and other events throughout the community for a two-year term, beginning March 2024. The Poet Laureate’s mandate also includes the creation of a legacy project that will be unique to the individual. The Poet Laureate receives an honorarium of $1,000 per term.

“We are thankful for the tremendous writing and poetry initiatives Kyla has undertaken during her time as Poet Laureate,” said Greater Sudbury Public Library Board Chair, Michael Bellmore. “Thank you for sharing your passion and guidance. We are eager to see what new ideas and initiatives are to come with the selection of our eighth Poet Laureate.”

Applicants for the position of Poet Laureate must be a published poet, recognized for their achievements, and active in the cultural and literary community. Additional requirements include demonstrated leadership skills, public speaking ability and flexibility to carry out all duties required of the position in a manner that reflects English, French or Indigenous heritage.

A complete description of the position and details for application are available online at www.sudburylibraries.ca/poet-laureate-call-out/. Closing date for applications for the 2024-2026 term is 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
